Animal Rescue & Sanctuary

Chickens and Ducks

We have rescued 30 chickens and ducks from other camps in Slab City, neighboring towns and even other States. Some of them come to us badly injured and in need of care, others just needed a new home. We get the birds back to good health and give them a nice home to live out their lives. We collect the eggs and eat/sell those, but the birds will never become food. We meant it when we said rescue.

Tortoises

We have an adult pair of Desert Tortoises that were raised in captivity. Shortly after receiving them they laid eggs and now we also have a few babies! We have since separated the adults to prevent further breeding. You can see more info on why we separated them here. We also care for a 150 lb male Sulcata Tortoise (a popular pet species from Africa) and a smaller, female Sulcata.

Spacious pens and enclosures keep animals safe and happy.

In the most perfect of scenarios, chickens and ducks would love to be free ranging in a field surrounded by nature. In Slab City, free range = free lunch for dogs. We have received chickens with very bad wounds from being attacked by dogs because the chicken was able to roam free. It's just not worth it.

We keep all of our birds in spacious pens that keep roaming dogs and wild predators away so birds can be birds without fear. As we intake new animals, the pens get larger to accomodate. Our goal is to give each animal enough room for them to feel comfortable and get plenty of excercise.

Dogs and Cats

We have 4 wonderful dogs of our own but also on occasion take on a 5th, foster dog with the intent of rehoming. We have rehomed a few dogs out of Slab City so far. We have also taken in a few cats that wandered up and needed a home.

Wild Animals

Every once in a while, a wild animal gets brought to our doorstep in need of help. We have rehabilitated lizards, birds and even insects and released them back into the wild. We now keep baby bird formula on hand for each Spring when babies start falling out of nests.

  • Self Adhering Bandages

Sometimes we need to perform medical procedures on injured animals and bandaging them up properly is very important. These bandages stick to themselves very well and are moisture resistant so they are great for ducks and other animals that get muddy and dirty.
